Personalised Handmade Ceramic Straight Water Jug - Italian in Blue
Personalised Handmade Ceramic Straight Water Jug - Italian in Blue
- Personalised orders will take up to 6 weeks
A tall, straight-sided water jug, hand-thrown in my Somerset workshop and painted with a flowing Italian-inspired design in deep blue.
The form is simple and upright, with a generous handle and a well-shaped pouring lip, making it easy to use at the table. The decoration runs lightly around the middle, with loose brushwork, small dotted details and blue lined rim.
It holds a good amount, making it ideal for water, juice or summer drinks. A practical piece for everyday use, with the quiet character of something made and painted by hand.

Personalisation
Please enter your inscription exactly as you would like it to appear. Names are often spelled in different ways, so everything will be painted precisely as written, including capital letters. For example, William, WILLIAM and william will each look different. Capital letters tend to work best for the main inscription.
You may also add a handwritten message on the base. The layout will be arranged to suit the shape of each piece.
If you would like to see a preview before we begin, please add a sketch to your order. Examples can be seen in the Gallery.
For bowls, inscriptions are painted around the centre and framed by the surrounding pattern. Smaller bowls include a simple central motif that echoes the outer design.
If you choose to add a motif, colours will be selected to complement the pattern unless you specify a preference in your order notes.

Inspired by traditional Majolica or Faience, each piece is made using earthenware clay from San Sepolcro in Italy and finished with a homemade tin glaze based on a long established Aldermaston Pottery recipe.
Each piece is made and decorated by hand, giving it its own character and slight variations in colour and brushwork.

How the Pottery is Made
The Making Process
I make each piece in the spirit of traditional Majolica, using time-honoured methods and materials that give the pottery its soft texture and quietly vivid colour.
The clay is shaped by hand on the wheel, dried, then carefully finished before its first firing. Each piece is then dipped in a tin glaze and hand-painted, before being fired again to bring out the final colour and character.
Materials, Firing & Finish
The pottery is fired at a slightly higher temperature than is typical for European Majolica, which gives added strength while retaining the softness of earthenware.
Because of this, it is not as hard as many commercially produced ceramics and benefits from a little extra care when handling and washing.
Subtle variations are part of the process. Changes in the clay, glaze, oxides and even the position in the kiln can affect the final finish, giving each piece its own individuality.
Handmade Character & Variations
All pieces are made and decorated by hand, so there will always be slight variations in shape, size and colour.
No two are exactly the same. Bowls may not be perfectly round, and dimensions can vary a little from piece to piece.
If you are ordering more than one of the same item, I will always try to match them as closely as possible, though pieces from different firings may vary slightly.
