How the Pottery is Made

The Making Process

I make each piece in the spirit of traditional Majolica, using time-honoured methods and materials that give the pottery its soft texture and quietly vivid colour.

The clay is shaped by hand on the wheel, dried, then carefully finished before its first firing. Each piece is then dipped in a tin glaze and hand-painted, before being fired again to bring out the final colour and character.

Materials, Firing & Finish

The pottery is fired at a slightly higher temperature than is typical for European Majolica, which gives added strength while retaining the softness of earthenware.

Because of this, it is not as hard as many commercially produced ceramics and benefits from a little extra care when handling and washing.

Subtle variations are part of the process. Changes in the clay, glaze, oxides and even the position in the kiln can affect the final finish, giving each piece its own individuality.

Handmade Character & Variations

All pieces are made and decorated by hand, so there will always be slight variations in shape, size and colour.

No two are exactly the same. Bowls may not be perfectly round, and dimensions can vary a little from piece to piece.

If you are ordering more than one of the same item, I will always try to match them as closely as possible, though pieces from different firings may vary slightly.
